Day 01:
... / LIMA
Upon arrival, reception and transfer to selected hotel. The city of Lima was founded by the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro on January 5, 1535, the eve of the Epiphany of the Magi – from which it derived its evocative original name of La Ciudad de los Reyes or “The City of Kings”. It is a colonial city of rare fascination and unexpected pleasures; with quiet elegant corners among ancient buildings where the night air is scented with jasmine. Overnight in lima.
Day 02:
LIMA / IQUITOS / ACTS CANOPY LODGE
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for an early morning flight to Iquitos. Upon arrival, reception and transfer to Sucasani River dock, where a motor boat ride will take you to Centro Amazónico de Estudios Tropicales Canopy Walkway Lodge, where you will concentrate on terra firme birds and especially night excursions for Nocturnal Currasow. Upon arrival, after a short briefing, you will settle into your room for a refreshing siesta. In the afternoon, after lunch, you will enjoy an introductory guided walk into the medicinal gardens in search of Cinereous Becard and the recently described Orange-eyed Flycatcher. After dinner, you will enjoy a night guided excursion seeking for nocturnal birds. Overnight at the Lodge.
Day 03:
ACTS CANOPY LODGE
After breakfast all day exploring the canopy walkway and terra firme forest. In terra firme forest and from the canopy walkway you will be on the hunt for Dugand’s Antwren, Band-tailed Oropendola, Sapphire-rumped Parrotlet, Olive-striped Antpitta, White-browed Purpletuft, Paradise, Great and Yellow-billed Jacamars, Yellow-browed, Sooty, Bicolored, Lunulated, Spot-winged and Slate-colored Antbirds, Chestnut-belted Gnateater, Collared Antwren, Reddish and Black-spotted Bare-eyes, among others. At night local staff will be alert during the night for the song of Nocturnal Currasow and in case it apperas you may participate in a night-time hunt for this rarely seen specie. Overnight at the Lodge.
Day 04:
ACTS CANOPY LODGE
After breakfast all day exploring the canopy walkway and terra firme forest. Day 05:
ACTS CANOPY LODGE / EXPLORNAPO LODGE
After breakfast, boat transfer to Explornapo Lodge, where you will explore the varzea forest and river islands. Species you will be looking for in the river islands include Zimmer’s Woodcreeper, Short-tailed Parrot, Lesser Wagtail Tyrant, Castelnau’s Antshrike, Parker’s and White-bellied Spinetail, Bay and Lesser Hornero’s, Leaden Antwren, Bicolored and Pearly-vented Conebill, Black and White and Ash-breasted Antbirds, Olive-spotted Hummingbird, River Tyrannulet, among others. In varzea forest you will be looking for the recently described Orange-eyed Flycatcher (common), Yellow-crowned Elaenia, Cinnamon Atilla, Dot-backed Antbird, Velvet-fronted Grackle, Black Bushbird, Black-tailed Antbird (a localized endemic), White-chinned Jacamar, Spotted Puffbird, among others. Overnight at the Lodge.
Day 06:
EXPLORNAPO LODGE
After breakfast, you will explore the varzea forest and river islands. Day 07:
EXPLORNAPO LODGE / CUMACEBA LODGE
After breakfast, early morning birding at Explornapo. At the appointed time, river boat transfer down the Amazon to Cumaceba Lodge. Upon arrival, if time permits you will explore transitional floodplain and varzea forest trails. Overnight at the Lodge.
Day 08:
CUMACEBA LODGE
After breakfast, full day birding varzea forest and ox-bow lakes. You will be looking for Red and White Spinetail, Brownish Elaenia, Many-banded, Lettered and Ivory-billed Aracaris, Festive Parrot, Amazonian Barred Woodcreeper, Black-faced Hawk, Agami Heron, Long-billed Woodcreeper, Paradise Jacamar. Yellow-hooded Blackbird,White-eared Jacamar, Cinnamon Attila, Hoatzin, among others. You will also look for the Pygmy Marmoset, the world’s smallest primate, and Pink River Dolphins. Overnight at the Lodge.
Day 09:
CUMACEBA LODGE / IQUITOS
After breakfast, morning birding at Cumaceba Lodge. At the appointed time, river boat transfer to the bustling city of Iquitos. Upon arrival, reception and transfer to selected hotel. At night you will enjoy a delicious dinner overlooking the bustling main square or the mighty Amazon River. Overnight in Iquitos.
Day 10:
IQUITOS / ALLPAHUAYO MISHANA RESERVE / IQUITOS
After breakfast, early transfer to The Allpahuayo Mishana Reserve, just outside Iquitos. Here you will be on the lookout for some rare and recently found white sand forest birds – including the newly described Ancient Antwren, Allpahauyo Antbird, Mishana Tyrannulet, Northern Chestnut-tailed Antbird and a yet to be described Gnatcatcher. Other special birds here are Pompadour Cotinga, Yellow-throated Flycatcher, Orange-crowned Manakin, Sulphur-crested Tyrant-Manakin, Cinnamon-crested Spadebill, White-crowned Manakin, Citron-bellied Atilla, Zimmers Tody-Flycatcher, Red-legged Honeycreeper, Yellow-browed Antbird, among others. You will also enjoy some night birding looking for the White-winged, Rufous Potoo, commoner Crested and Spectacled Owls. At the appointed time night return to selected hotel in Iquitos. Overnight in Iquitos.
Day 11:
IQUITOS / ALLPAHUAYO MISHANA RESERVE / IQUITOS
After breakfast, early transfer to The Allpahuayo Mishana Reserve, just outside Iquitos. Here you will be on the lookout for some rare and recently found white sand forest birds – including the newly described Ancient Antwren, Allpahauyo Antbird, Mishana Tyrannulet, Northern Chestnut-tailed Antbird and a yet to be described Gnatcatcher. IQUITOS / LIMA / ...
After breakfast, morning birding around Iquitos. At the appointed time, transfer to the airport to board your flight to Lima and connections.
