Title: BALLESTAS ISLANDS AND NAZCA LINES (FULL DAY)
Interest: Culture, Ecotourism
Destinations: Reserva Nacional de Paracas, Islas Ballestas, Líneas de Nazca
Trip Length: 08 hours
Paracas is a windswept arid peninsula and home to one of Peru's most renowned archaeological sites. The Paracas Reserve, Peru's largest coastal wildlife sanctuary, includes the Ballestas Islands, accessible from Paracas by boat. These islands are home to thousands of resident and migratory sea birds, many endemic to the Humboldt Current. In the summer, condors are also frequent visitors and flamingos occasionally pause at the bay. There are many theories that seek to explain the reason why ancient Peruvians created the Nasca Lines, drawings of animals (a monkey, a spider and a fish, just to name a few), geometric figures (trapezoids, a labyrinth of straight lines and triangles), and of birds that have been preserved for more than 2000 years under the harsh atmospheric conditions of the desert. Many say that the lines were part of a pre-Inca irrigation system; others believe that the pampas were an extraterrestrial runway; but the most accepted theory goes that ancient Peruvians used these lines as an enormous astronomic calendar.
