As of 2000 years ago, the inhabitants of Nazca developed in Cantalloc a system of underground aqueducts to irrigate dry lands that lacked of surface water. The system is unique in Peru and perhaps in the whole world. In addition to the channels of Cantalloc, nearby visitors may also see various lines etched on the desert floor. There are many theories that seek to explain the reason why ancient Peruvians created the Nasca Lines, drawings of animals (a monkey, a spider and a fish, just to name a few), geometric figures (trapezoids, a labyrinth of straight lines and triangles), and of birds that have been preserved for more than 2000 years under the harsh atmospheric conditions of the desert. Many say that the lines were part of a pre-Inca irrigation system; others believe that the pampas were an extraterrestrial runway; but the most accepted theory goes that ancient Peruvians used these lines as an enormous astronomic calendar.
