Manu National Park is spread out between two departments, Cusco and Madre de Dios, and covers an area of 1’692.137 hectares (or the entire Manu River basin). Since 1977, the Manu National Park has formed the Nucleus of the Manu Biosphere Reserve, which was declared a Natural World Heritage Site by the UNESCO in 1987. The park has a great variety of animal species: more than 800 bird species; 200 mammal species; and over a hundred bat species.
The Manu Biosphere Reserve has the highest diversity of life on Earth and is one of the most important conservation units in the world. If you were to choose the best birding trip in the world, this must surely be a candidate for the winner. A trip to Manu is a trip to one of the world’s great wilderness areas where wildlife is still plentiful and over 500 species of birds have been recorded. The beauty of this trip is the great variety of habitats visited; the distinctive habitats to bird (including bamboo); and the huge trails and canopy towers for superb birding.
