Arequipa, also known as The White City for its beautiful white walls made of ashlar, is one of the most beautiful and best preserved cities in Peru. The city’s downtown, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, shows a great variety of colonial monuments. On the other hand its countryside has fascinating scenery. Its main attraction is the 16th century monastery of Santa Catalina (recently opened to public after 400 years of seclusion).
