Puno hugs the shores of fabled Lake Titicaca, the world's highest navigable body of water, a mystical and sacred place in Andean mythology since, according to the legend, the children of the Sun God, emerged from its waters to found the Tawantinsuyo (Inca Empire). Its main attractions are the Uros Islands, a fantastic and unique compound comprised of artificial isles built from the totora reed (marsh reeds); the Taquile Island, where its habitants are distinguished by their detailed, fine, and colourful textiles and handicrafts; and Sillustani, an impressive fortified burial towers (chullpas), where nobles were buried in these cylindrical chullpas in pre-Inca times.
