Overview: It is the largest island in the Titikaka Lake and has a surface of 14.3 sq km. It has a mountainous terrain with many terraces, the vestiges of the advanced agricultural knowledge of the Incas. This island was a sanctuary with the temple of the virgins dedicated to the Sun God or Inti. Nowadays, the island is inhabited by quechua and aymara indigenous, they base their economy in crafts and grazing and speak the quechua and aymara ancestral languages, they are very proud of their indigenous heritage. In the island several archaeological sites can be seen, like the ""Sacred Rock"" or Rock of the origins; The Chinkana or Labyrinth; The Pilkokaina Palace (unique for its constructive characteristics); and The staircases of Yumani. There is a legend which says that when the Incas knew they went to be conquered, they decided to throw all their jewels and gold in the Titikaka Lake. Actually, several of these pieces were found and are exposed in the archaeological museum of Challapampa.
