Overview:
Paracas National Reserve, wedged in the middle of the coastal desert in the department of Ica, covers an area of 335.000 hectares and is the only national reserve that protects part of the Peruvian sea which is chilled by the cold Humboldt Current. This unique area is home to some of the world´s richest fishing grounds, made possible by marine up swells that bring to the surface vast masses of plankton, a vital food supply for hundreds of fish species. The Reserve is also home to guano-producing bird species and large colonies of sea lions. It is a haven for dozens of visiting migratory bird species and endangered species such as the marine wildcat or chingungo, the Humboldt penguin and pink flamingoes. The area also saw the rise of the Paracas culture, a major pre- Colombian civilization that left a legacy of superb textiles and items of pottery whose quality continues to astound visitors.
Itinerary:
Early in morning, at approximately 3.30 am, transfer to the station to board the bus service to Pisco. Upon arrival, reception and transfer to Paracas to enjoy a motor boat excursion to Ballestas Islands, one of the world’s most important marine reserves, where you may observe sea birds, Humboldt penguins, boobies, pelicans, among the many other species that converge there looking for shelter. These sea birds share their home with hundreds of playful sea lions that you may see swimming around the boat or lazing on the rocks. You may even catch a glimpse of the elusive condor. On your way back to the shore you will see the huge Candelabro, a candelabra-shaped etching on the cliffside. Many people believe that this enigmatic drawing is related to the Nazca lines, while others believe it is a representation of the Southern Cross Constellation, while a few believe it was a stylized drawing of a cactus that was used by high Inca and pre-Inca priests as an hallucinogen. After the motor boat excursion, you will enjoy a land tour through The Paracas National Reserve. First you will visit the Julio C. Tello Site Museum where you will admire fine pottery pieces and the famous polychrome textiles made by the Paracas peoples, then you will head to the reserve’s beautiful beaches. At the appointed time, transfer to the bus station to board the bus service back to Lima. Upon arrival, reception and transfer to your hotel.
