Overview:
The town of Chinchero, strategically located 30 kilometers northwest of Cusco, had been entirely constructed on an extremely wide Incan setting. It was founded in the middle of the most beautiful cultivated lands in order to be used as a resting place by Inca Túpac Yupanqui. On its wide plateau, decorated by Piuray and Huaypo lagoons, you can find imposing snow-capped mountains. Chinchero has a rich monumental and cultural heritage and is one of the few places in Cusco that visibly maintains the Incan urban design. The remains of the Incan palace, the colonial church erected on stone foundations, its impeccable cultivation terraces and a colorful fair constitute their main attractions.
Itinerary:
In the morning or after lunch (two daily departures options are available), after a 45 minutes’ drive, you will enjoy a half-day guided excursion to the Town of Chinchero in The Sacred Valley of the Incas. The main attractions of Chinchero are the main square temple, Palace of Tupac Yupanqui, House of Mateo Pumacahua, and Chinchero Murals. The Temple, located in front of the main square, had been erected on the foundation of the Incan walls of the Palace of Inca Túpac Yupanqui; The Murals, express the enormous significance of the conflict between the Inca’s and Spaniards in this region. Afterwards, you will visit the house of Mateo Pumacahua, who was one of the most powerful Peruvian Indian chiefs during the XVIII century. The last stop of your excursion will be the traditional handicrafts fair of Chinchero, where people sell sheep, llama and alpaca-wool garments as well as typical handicrafts and musical instruments. On the drive back to your hotel you will be able to see the Piuray Lagoon, which has supplied the city of Cusco with water through underground aqueducts since the time of the Incas.
